Terminal One - A brief history

All projects operating from Terminal One are managed by the Blantyre Youth Development Team (BYDT). The team was established in 1984 by local activists, determined to improve facilities and representation for young people in Blantyre and surrounding areas.

After a lengthy campaign, suitable accommodation was secured and through local consultation, the most popular activities among young people identified. The building, previously “The Elizabeth Scott Centre” was refurbished, equipped with an impressive array of modern music, photographic and other state of the art equipment and re-named Terminal One. It was opened to the public in December 1991 by Councillor Malcolm Waugh.

Officials - The committee also has representation from Strathclyde Police, South Lanarkshire Council and Changing Places (Community Regeneration in South Lanarkshire ). However, these representatives attend in an advisory capacity only; they are not entitled to vote at meetings.

The Committee currently receives financial support from the following sources: -

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue

Terminal One also generates additional income through the provision of a wide range of services for other organisations and local businesses.

Getting involved
Membership of the committee is open to anyone aged 14 - 25 years and resident in and around the South Lanarkshire area. To join, you must be able to attend monthly meetings and be willing to contribute as a volunteer in whatever area of Terminal One's business that interests you.

What do you get out of it?
Joining the committee would provide you with experiences you are unlikely to get anywhere else. Involvement in the recruitment of staff, dealing with finances and directly influencing the Terminal's programme.
